Deodorant with aluminium: effects, use and tolerability

As the manufacturer of Yerka, we have been dealing with heavy sweating and the questions people affected have about it for generations. This includes the question of aluminium in deodorants and antiperspirants. Yerka contains aluminium chloride—deliberately, because this active ingredient can effectively reduce sweat production.

It’s important to us to explain openly how aluminium salts work, what current research says, and what to watch out for when using them. Because a deodorant with aluminium isn’t necessary for every purpose. However, if the issue is not only body odour but, above all, underarm wetness and heavy sweating, it offers a decisive advantage over a regular deodorant.

How does a deodorant with aluminium work against sweat?

Strictly speaking, a deodorant with aluminium is usually an antiperspirant. While a classic deodorant is mainly intended to prevent unpleasant odour, an antiperspirant targets sweat production itself.

Aluminium salts react with components of the skin in the sweat gland duct. This temporarily forms a gel-like complex that narrows or blocks some of the sweat ducts. As a result, less sweat reaches the skin’s surface.

The sweat glands are neither destroyed nor permanently switched off. When the complex dissolves again through the skin’s natural renewal process, sweating increases again. That’s why an aluminium-containing deodorant is used regularly depending on the product and individual needs.

The effect remains limited to the treated area of skin. The body’s natural temperature regulation continues to work via the many other sweat glands. In addition, less moisture can also limit the development of sweat odour. Fresh sweat is initially largely odourless. The typical smell mainly develops when skin bacteria break down components of sweat and skin secretions.

How should aluminium be assessed from a health perspective?

Aluminium can harm the body in high amounts. What matters, however, is how much is actually absorbed. With cosmetic antiperspirants, current evidence suggests absorption through the skin is significantly lower than was assumed for a long time.

After evaluating more recent human studies, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment concludes that, based on current scientific knowledge, health impairments from daily use of antiperspirants with aluminium chlorohydrate are unlikely. The EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety also considers aluminium compounds safe within the concentrations studied.

We don’t want to draw either a blanket conclusion of “aluminium is always harmless” or an unnecessary warning from this. The compound used, the amount of active ingredient, and correct use are all part of an objective assessment. In addition, aluminium salts can irritate the skin locally, even if no relevant health risk is expected from absorption through the skin. Who is aluminium-containing deodorant especially suitable for?

A deodorant with aluminium is primarily suitable for people who want to reduce not only odour but also the amount of sweat. This can be helpful with heavy sweating, visible sweat stains, summer heat, physical exertion, stress, or hormonal changes.

People with localized excessive sweating under the arms—and, depending on the product, on the hands or feet—can also benefit from an antiperspirant. Yerka was developed specifically for people who suffer from heavy sweating, underarm wetness, or unpleasant sweat odour and don’t achieve sufficient results with a regular deodorant.

If, on the other hand, you sweat normally and mainly want to limit odour formation, you don’t necessarily need a sweat-inhibiting active ingredient. In this case, a regular deodorant may be sufficient.

Sudden-onset sweating, night sweats, or sweating that affects the whole body should be medically evaluated. This is especially true if additional symptoms such as a racing heart, fever, trembling, or unexplained weight loss occur.

Which brands and products contain aluminium?

Aluminium salts are found in many products labelled as antiperspirant, anti-transpirant, or anti-perspirant. Some products that are simply labelled “deodorant” also contain sweat-inhibiting active ingredients. The ingredients list on the packaging is therefore the most reliable source of information.

Among other things, you may see the following names there:

  • Aluminum Chloride
  • Aluminum Chlorohydrate
  • Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate

We deliberately refrain from listing other brands here. Formulas and product ranges change regularly. This also applies when searching for a “deodorant with aluminium at dm” or at other drugstores: what matters is not only where the product is bought, but which active ingredient is listed in the current ingredients list.

Searching for a “deodorant with aluminium test winner” also only provides initial guidance. Test results always relate to the specific products tested, the time of the test, and certain evaluation criteria. A highly rated product doesn’t automatically match your personal level of sweating, your skin, or your preferred way of using it.

How does the effect differ from aluminium-free alternatives?

We don’t want to portray aluminium-free products as generally worse. However, they serve a different purpose. A deodorant without aluminium is primarily aimed at body odour. It can inhibit odour-causing bacteria, bind odours, or mask them with fragrances. Sweat production is usually not significantly reduced as a result.

Some aluminium-free products contain powder, starch, or other absorbent substances. These can absorb existing moisture, but they don’t prevent new sweat from forming.

The difference can therefore be summed up simply:

  • Deodorant with aluminium: reduces the amount of sweat and can therefore also limit odour and underarm wetness.
  • Deodorant without aluminium: mainly works against body odour without temporarily narrowing the sweat ducts.

If you mainly struggle with odour, an aluminium-free deodorant may work well for you. If heavy sweating and wet clothing are the real problem, an antiperspirant with aluminium salts is usually the more targeted solution. However, aluminium-free doesn’t automatically mean more skin-friendly. Alcohol, fragrances, essential oils, or baking soda can also irritate sensitive underarm skin.

What should you look out for if you have sensitive skin?

If used incorrectly or too generously, aluminium salts can temporarily cause burning or itching. This happens particularly often on still-damp, freshly shaved, or already irritated skin.

For the most skin-friendly use possible, please note the following points:

  • Apply the product only to completely dry, unbroken skin.
  • Do not use it immediately after shaving.
  • Use sparingly—more active ingredient does not automatically mean more effect.
  • Follow the recommended frequency of use.
  • Pause use if there is noticeable redness, strong burning, or persistent itching.

Yerka is dabbed on in the evening to skin that has been cleansed with plain water and carefully dried. Just a few drops on a cotton pad or cotton ball are enough. The product remains on the skin overnight and is washed off the next morning. At the beginning, two to three applications per week are usually sufficient. Once the desired effect has been achieved, the interval between applications can be increased.

For sensitive skin, Yerka’s liquid form makes it possible to dose very carefully and, if needed, dilute it with water according to the usage instructions. A mild, short-lived tingling sensation can occur. Stronger or longer-lasting burning, however, is a sign to stop using it and allow the skin to heal completely first.

A deodorant with aluminium is a proven way to specifically reduce heavy sweating.
